Called “Baby” by her mother, and most of the people on the studio lot, Jean was indeed a young actress who ultimately was a trendsetter. Think platinum blonde hair, bee stung lips, satin clingy dresses and there you have it…or her.
Jean was also a great actress and Dinner at Eight was wonderful. I loved her scene with the unforgettable actress, Marie Dressler. Her movie with Clark Gable, Red Dust, was also wonderful. She gave a great performance in every film. She had that “spark” that literally jumped off the screen and these posters, lobby cards and stills prove this.
She was the first platinum blonde to lead the way for others who would come later, like Marilyn Monroe, Diana Dors and Jayne Mansfield.
Her personal life was not without trauma and pain. Her first husband committed suicide. She then became engaged to actor William Powell, but at 26, Jean died and left those she loved and her fans in mourning. If you watch her movies, you will see, she was truly one of a kind.
