It has been said that for an actor it is easier to make people cry than laugh. Yet, the comedies which succeed lighten the spirit and can become classics.
The lobby cards from 20th Century are extremely rare images of that movie. The film is considered a classic today and it starred the late Carole Lombard and John Barrymore. These lobby cards are among my personal favorites.
The Wife vs. Secretary poster with Clark Gable, Jean Harlow and Myrna Loy is another favorite. Obviously this movie starred three of the most powerful performers in Hollywood at that time. I personally love the line and symmetry of the poster.
The Incredible Mr. Limpet is another favorite movie of mine. It starred Don Knotts, as a man who desperately wanted to become a fish. It is an addicting kind of movie because once you start watching, you really do want to see what happens at the end. Whenever I find people who have seen the movie, they talk about it with a big smile on their face, so it obviously leaves an impression.
Also included in this group are Francis the Talking Mule, who pre-dated Mr. Ed on TV.
Several Sophia Loren posters are in the group, as well as Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina, and Grace Kelly in The Swan.
It is interesting to note The Swan was not among Grace’s best films, but the poster with her image is exquisite.
I once told my daughter that I buy posters, lobby cards, and stills of people looking beautiful. If they were to see these images or come back to life and see these images, I’d hope they’d say “Thank You.” We all like to be presented in a good light.
